How to Apply

Participants must be at least 19 years old (having finished the freshman year of college). There is no maximum age.

Application for Druid City 2022 can be completed through YAP Tracker.  Click HERE to go to the application.  The is no application charge.

NOTE: You do not need to be a paying subscriber to YAP Tracker to use the application form, although you will need an account (guest accounts are available; see the website for details).

Application Deadline – March 15, 2022
YAP Tracker will ask for the items listed below, and you may contact Dr. Paul Houghtaling at phoughtaling@ua.edu with any questions:

  • résumé (a one-page document)
  • headshot (singers)
  • uploadable video recordings (MP4 links, YouTube videos, Vimeo, etc.) of two selections, at least one of which must be an opera aria in any language.  Please note: Applicants are encouraged not to use one of the 28 Italian Songs and Arias as their opera aria submission, but rather a selection more appropriate for the young artist audition process.  Two opera aria submissions are strongly suggested, but a second selection from musical theatre or art song repertoire is acceptable.

NOTE: Incomplete applications will not be accepted by YAPTracker. Two recordings/videos are required.

Paid Internships – returning for 2022

Collaborative pianist and stage director interns should follow the same application procedures and may also apply on YAP Tracker. Aspiring coach-pianists and stage directors should submit a detailed resume, which includes the names and contact information of three references, along with the recordings IF POSSIBLE (video recordings, samples of stage direction or voice/opera collaboration through MP4 links, YouTube videos, Vimeo, etc.) via email or YAPTracker.  Directors, we realize that it is often difficult to obtain video recordings of scene work or directing samples, so the recordings are not a requirement, just a suggestion if you have them; video recordings are required for collaborative pianists.)  NOTE: EARLIER DEADLINE for collaborative pianist and stage directing intern candidates in ordinary years.

Please Note:  The ideal candidates for the collaborative pianist and stage directing internship positions should have some experience already in these arenas; coach-pianist and stage directing interns are considered faculty members of the Druid City Opera Workshop.  Many recent stage directing interns have already completed advanced degrees or were in the midst of completing MFA or DMA degrees with an emphasis in direction.  Others were already working in the field as academic opera workshop instructors, ADs in regional opera houses, or have gained stage directing experience through other means. Those still pursuing their undergraduate degrees may not have the desired experience for this employment. Pianists should have some background in collaborating with singers; a degree in collaborative piano is not necessary.  Please feel free to contact Dr. Houghtaling with additional questions regarding qualifications for these professional positions.  phoughtaling@ua.edu
